    Bailey Wins In Qatar

    Thursday, May 7, 1998

DOHA, Qatar (Donovan Bailey WWWsite) -- After 70 meters, Bailey passed fellow Canadian Bruny Surin, who was out of the blocks faster, to record a 1-2 Canadian punch in the 100 meters at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar

Women were be barred from wearing revealing track uniforms when they competed for the first time at an international meet in this Muslim country.

To satisfy Qatar's conservative Muslim population, female athletes had to wear T-shirts and track suits in their events.

Whatever they wear, the very participation of women in such a meet is a breakthrough. For the first time, women also will be allowed to watch a major sports event in Qatar.

Their appearance has also overshadowed that of world record holder Donovan Bailey.

In the 100 meters, Bailey recorded a time of 10.07s. Surin was second with a time of 10.15s.
